Early childhood education teachers take action urging government to prioritise tamariki

07 Haki 2023

Kaiako and kaimahi working in early childhood education (ECE) are holding a national day of action tomorrow to call on the new government to put tamariki first by prioritising improvements to the ECE sector.

ECE kaiako say they are deeply concerned about what’s to come after the Government made clear its intention to scrap a Fair Pay Agreement (FPA) for the sector, as well as having no plan to fund full pay parity.

ECE kaiako and kaimahi are collectively calling on the Government to fix ECE and prioritise:

  • Better teacher to child ratios and staffing levels
  • Pay parity for all ECE kaiako: value the teachers of our youngest learners
  • A funding system to support equity across ECE: fix funding to deliver high quality early learning and retain a stable workforce

ECE Day of Action events take place around the motu, led by kaiako and kaimahi during and around work hours on Friday 8 December. See https://action.nzei.org.nz/calendars/loud4ece for more.
